Course: Art History: SFPL and other resources

Finding journal articles

  • If it is in there as full text you are set!
  • If not, click on the link that says “Find this article” to see if the SFPL can tell you where you can find it. If it says that it is available via JStor or Gale, you can access those resources through school.
  • If it isn’t available electronically, check to see if SFPL has it in physical form and where it is. If the library has it there are three possible places it could be. The general rule is:
    • Periodicals dated 2000-present are in the open stacks on the 4th floor
    • Those dated 1993-1999 are in the closed stacks and can be retrieved from the 4th floor page desk
    • Anything prior to 1993 will most likely be in compact storage and needs to be requested ahead of time. If you have articles that fall into this category, you can call the SFPL Magazines and Newspaper Center at (415) 557-4400. Tell them the name of the journal(s) you are looking for as well as the date and volume.

Finding Books

SFPL has a great collection of art and art history books. You can place a hold on them and get them delivered to whichever branch is most convenient for you (the branch on Sacramento St near the school is the Presidio branch). If books are library use only or only available through the page desk, you'll need to go to the 4th floor of the Main Library at Civic Center to access them.
